If you plan to go out with your MacBook and want to make sure you have battery life that lasts all day, you can turn on Low Power Mode. Low Power Mode automatically lowers the screen brightness and the system clock speed, thereby reducing the amount of power used and conserving the battery.
We show you how to enable Low Power Mode in macOS Monterey. Apple has also redesigned System Settings in macOS Ventura, but Low Power Mode is still available. Here’s how to turn it on.
- Completion time: 2 minutes

Low Power Mode settings

At the top of the main section of the window is the setting for Low Power Mode. You have four options in the pop-up menu to choose from:
- Never: The MacBook is running as usual.
- EVER: The MacBook runs with light and the system clock is ignored a bit, regardless of whether the MacBook is plugged in or not.
- Battery only: When the MacBook is not plugged in, the brightness and system clock will be lowered. When the MacBook is plugged in, the MacBook runs at normal brightness and clock speed.
- Only with Power Adapter: When the MacBook is plugged in, the light and system clock are turned off. When the MacBook is unplugged, the MacBook runs at normal brightness and clock speed.
Select the option you want, then close System Settings.

Check Low Power Mode

A quick way to check the status of Low Power Mode in macOS Ventura requires the Battery icon found in the Menu Bar. If that’s there, you can click on the con and see if Low Power Mode is turned on.
If Battery is not in the Menu Bar, you can see it by going to System Settings > Control Centerthen scroll down to Battery section and flip the switch for Show in Menu Bar.
If you want a quick way to turn Low Power Mode on or off, you’ll need to install a third-party utility. Developer Jordi Bruin created a Menu Bar utility called Cooldown that does this–and it’s free.
