We’re home now with just over an hour until The Hogwarts Legacy State of Play. While other Sony State of Plays have been showcases of upcoming games, tonight is dedicated solely to the Harry Potter RPG.
This is the second State of Play stream hosted by Sony in March 2022, with the last one taking place on March 9 and focusing primarily on games from Japanese publishers. There weren’t many announcements at that show, the real takeaway was the reveal of a free Returnal expansion. Today’s stream should be different, there has been little showing of Hogwarts Legacy since the reveal of this trailer. We need to see the game in action and learn a lot about how exactly it works. We also hope to announce the release date.
Want to catch all the action live as it happens? Read on for all the details on how to watch Sony’s State of Play event when it starts at 2pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm GMT (or March 18 at 8am AEDT) – and what to expect from revealed in Hogwarts Legacy.
How to watch Sony State of Play livestream
Sony’s special Hogwarts Legacy edition of State of Play will take place at March 17 at 2pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm GMT (or March 18 at 8am AEDT).
The stream will last about 20 minutes and will focus entirely on the Hogwarts Legacy.
You can watch the stream live on Twitch (Opens in a new tab) or YouTube (Opens in a new tab) through official PlayStation channels. It will play live at the times listed above, but the show will automatically be uploaded to Sony’s YouTube channel after the broadcast, in case you missed it initially. You can also catch all the action live right here, via the embedded stream above.
What to expect
Sony has confirmed that this State of Play showcase will focus entirely on the upcoming Harry Potter RPG, Hogwarts Legacy – so don’t expect news or updates on any new PS5 games or hardware.
The stream is set to last around 20 minutes and will feature over 14 minutes of PS5 gameplay for the first time, as well as insight from the development team. In other words, this is our best look at the Hogwarts Legacy.
Details on the Harry Potter RPG are pretty thin on the ground so far, although we do know that Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world adventure that will give Harry Potter fans the chance to create their own adventure in the familiar locations from the series, moving away from the timeline of the books and films to tell an original story in the 1800s.
We know that the game will mainly take place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with new witches and wizards who can choose their own house, share potions classes, spells, and interact -fight with the dark wizards. Hopefully, the showcase will let us see some of these parts in action — and reveal some parts we’ve never heard of.
But the main hope we have for the Hogwarts Legacy reveal is the release date. The game was originally due for release in 2021 before being delayed to 2022, but we don’t have a firmer release date than that – although rumors point to a September 2022 release.
It should be noted that Hogwarts Legacy is not without controversy due to its connection with Harry Potter creator JK Rowling, who has received a lot of criticism in the past two years for allegedly making transphobic comments. An FAQ section (Opens in a new tab) on the game’s official website states that “JK Rowling was not directly involved in the creation of the game”, while a Bloomberg report suggests that Hogwarts Legacy will feature trans-inclusive character creation options. (Opens in a new tab). Bloomberg (Opens in a new tab) says the push for inclusivity came about as a reaction to Rowling’s comments. We may find out at State of Play if the Bloomberg report is accurate.
