How Wordle works

Wordle is a vocabulary game where players get six tries to guess a five-letter word. Once you enter a guess, the individual letters within the word you entered will appear in different colors. Each color has a different meaning.

  • Green: The entered letter is 100% correct — the correct letter in the correct space.
  • Yellow: The entered letter is in the correct word, but you put it in the wrong space.
  • Gray: The inserted letter is not used in the Wordle answer today, so it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

The goal is to guess the correct word in as few attempts as possible. If you don’t get the answer to six guesses, you lose.

Best Wordle starter words

You can jump right into Wordle but really won that’s another story. You only get a total of six attempts to solve each daily puzzle, and there is only one puzzle per day. If you don’t solve it in that number of guesses, you have to wait until the next day to try the next word again. If you want to maximize your chances of solving your daily puzzle, here are tried and true tips, and best starting words, for Wordle.

The most important guess is your first. You want to get as many green and yellow letters here as possible to help guide your future predictions. The most important letters to start with are the vowels — A, E, I, O, and U — so words with as many of them as possible are a good start. Some popular words to start people with luck are “adieu,” “media,” “emergence,” and “radio.” Just make sure not to choose a word with double letters, to get as much new information as possible.

Your second word, assuming the first one gives you a good jumping off point, should start to rely more on common consonants like R, S, and T. More good ones here we seen are “strict,” “irate. ,” and “shedding.” This is where things differ because each day is a different solution, but you don’t want to reuse any letters from the previous round that appear grayed out. This might push you to think a little harder. to make a word, but there is nothing to be gained from using a letter that you know is not in the answer.

Finally, remember those words CAN there is a duplicate letter. These words are the hardest to get, but also not the most common. If you get to the last round or two and fail, this is a good thing to remember.

And remember: As of November 2022, plural words that only add “es” or “s” to a word are no longer valid answers; for example “boats” and “wolves” will no longer be Wordle answers. Some plurals like “fungi” or “geese” are still valid. Importantly, all five-letter words in the dictionary are still valid for PROPHECY and get yellow or green letters from, but that doesn’t mean it’s there as a future solution. Other than that, just have fun with it!
